The red carpet trend Anna Wintour hates
There’s at least one red carpet style Anna Wintour has labelled “AW-NOT-OK.”
“We’re surrounded by so many celebrities that you feel are dictated to by their stylists and dictated to by what the press may think of them, and therefore end up in a strapless fishtail sequin dress that we’ve seen 5000 times,” Wintour, 69, said.
It’s not the first time the Met Gala guru has expressed her hatred of the popular red carpet gown.
In 2015, Page Six reported that Wintour would be giving the Tony Awards a much-needed makeover, after deeming the previous year’s fashion disastrous.
“I was just recently at the Tony Awards … and, God, they need your help. Let me tell you, it was a disaster,” Wintour said during an interview with Suzy Menkes at Central Saint Martins in London. “How many mermaid fishtail strapless sequin (gowns) can we see?”
So who are the stylish celebrities who pass muster with the iconic editor? Vanessa Redgrave: “Whom you always see looking absolutely immaculate … it’s just always appropriate,” according to Wintour.
“Or somebody like Lupita (Nyong’o), who’s taken such risks on the red carpet but always has looked like herself. She’s never not looked like Lupita, but is fearless in her choices.”
Wintour said: “I admire women who have a signature style and I admire those who take risks.”
Just as long as that signature style doesn’t include glittering mermaid gowns, apparently.
